About Us:

Pendemonium is a full time writing equipment shop owned by Sam and Frank Fiorella in Fort Madison, Iowa. Pendemonium was established in 1994 in Montclair, Virginia and moved to Fort Madison, Iowa in May 2000. We are one of just a handful of full time writing equipment dealers in the world.

We take pride in offering the very best personalized service we possibly can. Much of our business is transacted over the internet which some regard as rather impersonal, but we are determined to offer each of our customers service tailored to their needs. We make every effort to email replies to inquiries within 24 hours, usually we reply within a few hours. Unlike the big dotcom e-tailers, when you place an order with us via our secure order form, you'll get a confirmation from a real live human being. We strive to operate in a professional and responsible manner.

There are some oddities about owning a small niche market business! Since most of our items are vintage, it means we must hunt for them. We travel frequently to search for items to sell. Our laptop computer is always with us, but when on the road, as I'm sure many of you already know, connections can sometimes be iffy - replies can be delayed, but we do our best to get back to you quickly. Every now and then, even we need a few days of rest to rejuvenate, we'll post on the News & Updates section of the website if we will be incommunicado!

We invite you to visit our shop in historic downtown Fort Madison, Iowa. We're located in the far southeast corner of Iowa, right on the Mississippi River and about 15 miles north of the Missouri state line. Everything we list on the website is also available in the shop, in fact you're apt to find things in the shop that are not on the website! Because we travel to pen shows, our hours are sometimes sporadic and we suggest you call ahead to make sure we're here. The shop is usually open Monday - Friday, 10AM-6PM and Saturdays 10AM - 4PM. Many times we're open on Sunday afternoons, too.

We offer a wide range of products for fountain pen collectors and fountain pen users. However, we're a bit persnickety about what we sell! We aim for the highest quality possible and try to offer you, our customers the best value. The majority of the pens we sell are vintage, each is restored to working order. Pendemonium carries a select offering of current production pens that we feel are well made and will serve our customers well. Since many of our items are vintage, our selection changes frequently and ranges from 18th century early writing instruments to the present. We stock "safe" inks, not "all" inks for your treasured fountain pens. A wide range of pen and inkwell collecting books is offered and we feel this is a very important aspect of our business, learning about the items you collect makes you an informed collector and a wise buyer. We make every effort to describe our products as accurately as possible and try to grade vintage items on the conservative side.

We realize that sometimes buying a vintage pen over the internet is just not as easy as buying a pen in person. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns about an item you are interested in. We promise not to lead you astray!

We are not just the owners of Pendemonium, we are collectors who are actively involved in the worldwide pen community of pen collecting. We attend and exhibit at many U.S. pen shows, this offers us the opportunity to meet our customers and fellow pen collectors face to face. Both Sam and Frank are members of the Pen Collectors of America, Sam served for 6 years, 2 years as President of the Board of Directors, of this non-profit organization devoted to furthering the hobby of pen collecting. She is currently the Librarian for the Society of Inkwell Collectors. We are also members of the Writing Equipment Society of England, the Society of Inkwell Collectors and we support many local pen clubs. Sam has written articles for The Pennant, Pen World International and Stylus magazines.

Last Tuesday I received the Noodler's Ink I ordered Thursday a week ago! That must be some kind of a speed record given the fact that there is a considerable distance between the USA and The Netherlands. It was my second order at Pendemonium and again I am very satisfied. The ink was very well packed and my delivery address note was clearly readable. The Legal Lapis Blue Ink has a beautiful, almost vintage blue black color and due to the "bullet proof" properties, it is practical to write with. In a very short time it has become my favorite fountainpen ink.

Here's an example of great (not just good) service: I was on the pen chat last Wednesday & mentioned that I have two Moore safety half-pens. One intact body (cap & all) with no nib, one intact barrel & nib, with no cap. Sam Fiorella of Pendemonium was on the chat and casually asked about which type of Moore I had. Today in my mailbox is a Moore safety from Sam. She says she's had it a while and it's sort of beat up, and maybe I can use it. Can I! It's going to enable me to put together my pens into something useful.

OK, I know that this gets repetitive, but for some things, you just can't say it enough.... I ordered some stationary from Sam a few days ago. Now to being with, it was great paper (Crane's) at truly magnificent prices, so I got a screaming deal all the way around. But then came the best part. The magic of Sam. I order the paper on Friday or Saturday, I can't remember which. Let's give it the benefit of the doubt and say it was Friday. On Monday, I get a package in the mail, with the order! This is from across the country! I have sent letters across the state that took more time!

If there weren't enough reasons already to deal with Sam (and Frank) at PENDEMONIUM {wonderful, helpful folks; great prices; great pens, book and tons of stuff, their wizardry of the mail delivery service, their live coverage of Orlando, and on} here's another. Sam sent me the neatest lagniappe with my most recent purchases - a vintage Sheaffer Snorkel Ad. With some vendors one just barely gets what one has paid for. With PENDEMONIUM you get a great deal and a a little something extra (No I'm not related to the Fiorella's, but its always a pleasure doing business with them.)

I want to thank Sam for the reports and specials from the Orlando Pen Show. I don't know how many others followed the specials, but on Saturday I ran in from doing yard work every hour or so, logged on to catch any news, quickly responded, and then back out for another work period.
It was fun and brought a little piece of the show to those of us who couldn't be there.

I know that you can make it in TWO days if you don't lollygag...!)

Just wanted to add my .02 in dealing with Sam. It's a real pleasure to do business with someone who is
a: knowledgeable about what they sell;
b: has a great sense of humor (well, a sense of humor -- sorry Sam); will always go the extra mile to satisfy a customer (sorry Frank!); and always includes a great thank-you note in your order. Not to go overboard, but I consider Sam a national treasure, and I plan on voting for her for President in 2000 (that's not *too* much, is it?).

Though it's been said many times and many ways, Sam is really a treasure. Just ordered a couple of her sac assortments and requested heavy on the standard sizes. Typical of Sam, NO PROBLEM. As e-commerce develops we consumers can but hope that all e-enterprises are as customer oriented as is Sam. I know that I'll have my order before the week is out, if priority mail works as it usually does. You just can't go wrong with Sam
